First time, a 19 year old girl have achieved French open title 2020 her success with the help of Dairia, Iga Swiatek said “She understands me and she is a sports psychologist, so both on court and off court she is doing, with me, a great job,”

Carl Diem (1920) established the first sports psychology laboratory at the Deutsche Sporthochschule in Germany.
American sport psychologis, Coleman Griffith published books- The Psychology of Coaching (1926), The Psychology of Athletics (1928).
Ferruccio Antonelli founded the International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP) in 1965. which is still working in the field of sport psychology.
Journal of Sport Psychology first published in 1979. Now it is renamed as Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology by An Official Publication of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity.
Scope of Sports Psychology
- Attention: Involves the ability to focus and tune out distractions, such as a crowd of screaming fans, and focus attention on the task at hand.
- Visualization: Involves imagery of performing a task, such as participating in an athletic event or successfully performing a particular task or skill.
- Motivation: the study of both extrinsic and intrinsic motivators.
- Extrinsic motivators- are external rewards, such as trophies, money, medals, or social recognition.
- Intrinsic motivators- arise from within, such as a personal desire to win or the sense of pride that comes from performing a skill.
Career as Sports Psychologist
The American Psychological Association describes sports psychology as a “hot career,” suggesting that those working in university athletic departments earn around $60,000 to $80,000 per year.
But in India, it is “Dead Cool career” with no recognition and money. You need to invest so much time and money to get placed as sport psychologist. There was Bhishmaraj Bam a famous sport psychologist.
Now a days, Government of India taking efforts to promote sport so demand of sport psychologist will rise in future.
