Therefore, investigators use various scientific and psychological techniques to identify deception and verify the credibility of statements.
It is important to note that no single technique can detect lies with complete accuracy. These methods only assist investigators and should always be used along with other evidence collected during the investigation.
The major techniques of detecting deception are:

- Forensic Hypnosis
- Eyewitness Testimony

1. Polygraph Test
Meaning
A polygraph test, commonly known as a lie detector test, is a technique used to measure an individual’s physiological responses while answering a series of questions. The basic assumption behind the test is that a person who is lying may experience psychological stress or anxiety, which produces measurable changes in the body.
However, a polygraph does not detect lies directly. Instead, it records physiological changes that may occur when a person is being deceptive. These physiological reactions are then interpreted by a trained examiner along with other available evidence.
Principle of the Polygraph Test
The polygraph test is based on the functioning of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), which controls involuntary bodily activities such as heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and sweating.

Throughout the examination, the machine continuously records changes in breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and skin conductance.
4. Interpretation of Results
After the examination, the recorded responses are carefully analysed by the examiner. The findings are interpreted along with other investigative evidence before drawing conclusions.

Limitations of the Polygraph Test

2. False Positive and False Negative Results
An innocent person may appear deceptive because of anxiety, while an experienced offender may remain calm and show very few physiological changes.
3. Examiner Bias
The accuracy of the results depends largely on the examiner’s training, experience, and interpretation of the physiological recordings.
4. Not Accepted as Conclusive Evidence
Polygraph findings are generally considered investigative aids and are not universally accepted as conclusive proof in courts of law.
Countermeasures
Some individuals attempt to manipulate the results of a polygraph examination. These attempts are known as countermeasures.
Examples include:
- Deliberately altering breathing patterns.

Factors Affecting Eyewitness Testimony
Several factors influence the reliability of eyewitness memory, including:
